# Aperture

> The adjustable lens opening, given as an f-number; smaller openings give more depth of field.

Also known as: f-stop, f-number. Category: Lighting and optics.

The aperture is the adjustable opening in a lens that controls how much light passes through, expressed as an f-number (f/4, f/8, f/16). A higher f-number means a smaller opening, less light and a greater depth of field.

## How PhotoRobot uses it

PhotoRobot notes that greater depth of field requires a higher f-number, which in turn demands more light intensity; this is one reason it recommends strobes for larger products. PhotoRobot Controls sets aperture remotely on supported Canon cameras.
