# Diffusion

> Scattering light through a translucent material to make it softer and more even.

Also known as: diffuser, diffuse lighting, diffusion background. Category: Lighting and optics.

Diffusion scatters light by passing it through or reflecting it off a translucent material such as fabric, paper or frosted acrylic. Diffused light is softer and more even, with gentler shadows and fewer hard reflections.

## How PhotoRobot uses it

Several PhotoRobot machines have an integrated diffuse white background, such as the CASE 850 and the white diffusion cloth on the C-Class turntables, which lets products be lit evenly for a white background. PhotoRobot also warns that excessive backlight through a diffuse box blurs product contours.
