# Transparent background

> An image whose background pixels are transparent, so the product can be placed on any colour or layout.

Also known as: transparency. Category: Photography techniques.

An image with a transparent background stores the product with a transparency mask (alpha channel) instead of a solid background. It can then be placed on any colour or design, which is useful for marketing layouts and configurators.

## How PhotoRobot uses it

PhotoRobot Controls can set the background to transparent in one click. Because JPEG does not support transparency, transparent images are exported as PNG or WebP; when a transparent image is exported as JPG, a background colour can be chosen.
