# White background

> A background of pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255), standard for e-commerce product images.

Also known as: pure white background, RGB 255,255,255. Category: Photography techniques.

A white background in product photography usually means pure white, RGB 255, 255, 255, with no visible gradient or shadow. Many marketplaces require it for main product images because it keeps the focus on the product and makes ranges look consistent.

A truly white background can be achieved in camera with careful lighting, or in post-production by whitening the background. Too much backlight produces light-wrap around the product edges.

## How PhotoRobot uses it

PhotoRobot Controls can automatically tune the background to pure white (255, 255, 255), which can be exported as JPEG, or make it transparent (PNG). Its histogram is optimised for images in which white background takes up most of the frame. Glass-plate machines and built-in diffusion backgrounds produce a white background directly in camera.
