# Weighing and Measuring Products with CubiScan

Read a detailed overview on the integration and use of CubiScan Dimensioning Systems to weigh & measure products in PhotoRobot workflows.

## Weighing and Measuring Objects with Cubiscan

The following user manual describes the use of **CubiScan Dimensioning Systems** in PhotoRobot production workflows. In a standard PhotoRobot workflow, CubiScan is an optional device, but its use enables greater levels of automation and productivity. Specifically, the device is widely popular for introducing automation into shipping and receiving lines.

CubiScan functions to weigh & measure items (in metric or imperial units), automatically record and create metadata, and automate photography sequences. The machine records all measurement, volume, and weight information as product metadata, which in parallel automatically adjusts PhotoRobot settings.

This enables the automatic adjustment of a robotic arm to the center of an object’s height before starting robotized capture. Capture is then in respect to the height of the object on the turntable, and to the product’s position. Additionally, all information is instantly present in a database for the automated publishing of product details alongside imagery.

In this way, teams receive valuable data for every item, while also fully automating capture according to specific dimensions and measurements.

**Note:** This user manual provides an overview of the [CubiScan 325](https://cubiscan.com/cubiscan-325-v3/), which is the device PhotoRobot recommends with its systems.

## Using CubiScan for Automatic PhotoRobot Adjustment

For the automatic adjustment of PhotoRobot, it is advantageous to have information about the size of the subject to photograph. At the very least, the information should include a measurement of the subject’s height from the turntable, with respect to the subject’s position. With this information, automatic elevation to the vertical center of a product is possible before beginning a sequence, and using the item’s dimensions. This is crucial to ensure the system is set to **automatically** and **correctly** operate, especially during the capture of multi-row spins.

For this, the company may choose to import the information directly from an internal system. However, if the information is unavailable or unreliable, semi-automatic or automatic measuring and recording of item information is possible via CubiScan.

CubiScan functions to weigh & measure the items and automatically record their details into the product database. This is also useful for later use across various channels, from eCommerce to logistics and more. The measurements (size and weight) can become an inclusion in the export data at the completion of every photography deal.

## CubiScan 325 - PhotoRobot Recommended CubiScan

While PhotoRobot fully supports all CubiScan products at the data link level, we recommend using the **CubiScan 325** device. The CubiScan 325 Dimensioning System offers better parameters and greater ease of use than the older CubiScan 125.

Both systems have the same price as well. The only difference is the absence of ultrasonic sensors in the newer CubiScan 325. These sensors are not useful for its given purpose, however.

CubiScan 325 is capable of measuring products up to a maximum size of 90 x 60 x 60cm, and weighing up to 25kg with a measurement error of 2g.

## Optional Supporting Table for CubiScan 325

While CubiScan can sit on a desk or floor, PhotoRobot also manufactures a **supporting table for CubiScan 325** as an optional accessory. The supporting table provides an ergonomic working height for the CubiScan 325 device, with storage shelves for boxes / products awaiting or after measurement.

## Barcode Reader Support in PhotoRobot Controls App

In addition to CubiScan, PhotoRobot also supports barcode readers to identify items in the system before weighing and measuring. This enables teams to simply scan a product code rather than searching for it by name in the system.

**Note:** For more information on barcode reader support including suitable barcode recommendations for use with PhotoRobot, refer to [PhotoRobot System Requirements](https://www.photorobot.com/manuals/system-requirements).

## SmartCode Activation of CubiScan

In addition to the ability to scan items into the system, it is also possible to scan a special [PhotoRobot SmartCode](https://www.photorobot.com/manuals/smart-codes-guide-and-printing) to activate a CubiScan device. Scanning this SmartCode will prepare CubiScan to measure an object’s weight and dimensions. Users first scan the SmartCode, and then simply scan the product code afterwards. CubiScan will then automatically record all measurements, dimensions, and the weight into PhotoRobot software.

## Launching CubiScan in PhotoRobot Controls App

To find the CubiScan option in PhotoRobot Controls App, use the standard system menu, and find the **CubiScan measure** option.
