Question 1

How does a ghost mannequin work?

Accepted Answer

Ghost mannequins have removable cut-out pieces or missing parts to facilitate high-speed mannequin photography, and make mannequins disappear in photos. The missing space makes clothing appear to float in thin air on an invisible model. This gives clothing a more realistic, full-bodied, and 3D appearance. Meanwhile, a glare reducing matte finish makes it easy to remove visible mannequin parts in photos via software post-processing. Sometimes, more advanced image compositing techniques may also be necessary. However, the right ghost mannequin with PhotoRobot can dramatically reduce photo editing requirements, even down to zero human input.

Question 2

Is it difficult to remove a mannequin from photos?

Accepted Answer

Achieving a ghost mannequin effect does not always require time-consuming photo editing and image compositing techniques. In fact, when the cut of clothing fits a mannequin well, it becomes possible to automate much of the post-processing. With PhotoRobot, this includes basic to advanced editing operations, and pre-programmable presets to consistently create high-quality ghost mannequin effects. The matte finish of ghost mannequins is also easy to edit out of pictures when visible. There are then Chroma-key operations to remove mannequin stands from photos, and software automation of background removal and image optimization. This way, even with minimal training, teams can accurately and quickly produce the effect on any type of clothing.

Question 3

How to select the best ghost mannequin

Accepted Answer

Choosing the best ghost mannequin for your business will depend on the type of clothing you intend to photograph. There are many types of ghost mannequins: full-body mannequins, 3/4 mannequin torsos, half-body mannequin torsos, and half-body mannequin legs. These include female, male, uni-sex, child, and plus-size ghost mannequin models. Each has their own unique measurements, with varying height, chest, waist, and hip sizes. Some feature more athletic builds for sportswear and tight clothing, while others facilitate photography of looser clothing like blouses and dresses. They may have more or less cut-out pieces for different cuts of clothes, or different poses to more realistically style products. Thus, select a ghost mannequin around your specific clothing photography: the types of clothes, their measurements, cuts, and styling requirements.

Question 4

Which types of products can you photograph?

Accepted Answer

It’s possible to use a ghost mannequin with nearly any type of clothing thanks to the wide range of different models available. Some mannequins even feature additional accessories, like a hat stand above the headless neck. These make it easier to visualize and photograph entire outfits and accessories together. Other models like mannequin torsos are obviously more appropriate for products like jackets, coats, blazers, and shirts. Three-quarter mannequin torsos then work well for photographing long blouses and dresses, while leg form mannequins display trousers, jeans, and shorts. Truly, there is a ghost mannequin for any type of fashion or clothing store.

Question 5

What mannequins combine with PhotoRobot?

Accepted Answer

All ghost mannequin products frictionlessly integrate into the PhotoRobot workflow with PhotoRobot’s Cube robot and automation software. The Cube can work with one or multiple robots simultaneously via software integration of robots, studio lights, cameras, and post-production. This includes control over all studio equipment, and over mannequin rotation when using the Cube as a rotating mannequin stand. Additionally, the Cube features a mannequin quick-exchange system for easy mounting of some mannequin models to the robot. It can function as a standalone turntable, or suspend items like necklaces and jewelry in air for photos. For higher volume workflows, combine multiple Cube robots with multiple mannequins, and an optional storage cart for easy on-location transport.

Question 6

When to take advantage of multiple mannequins

Accepted Answer

If photographing wider clothing product lines of different gender, size, and styles, it makes sense to have multiple mannequins. The same is true for higher volume workflows, such as photographing 100s or 1000s of products over a single project. In these cases, teams can prep and style multiple mannequins in advance, and then photograph products one after another in rapid succession. The workflow is even faster with the Cube’s quick mannequin-exchange system, and PhotoRobot automation software. PhotoRobot software integrates control over one or multiple robots, lights, cameras, and post-production from one computer. It’s even possible to synchronize control over 10, 20, or 60+ Cube workstations at once. Each can operate standalone, or in combination with 360 turntables and robot arm systems to fully equip any production space.

Question 7

Does it take much training to reproduce the effect?

Accepted Answer

With PhotoRobot, anybody on the team with little to no training can easily produce the ghost mannequin effect. This is thanks to software Presets and Wizard modes, which are configurable on installation and customizable by advanced operators. In fact, the right software configuration can make it as simple as knowing how to style the clothing on the mannequin. Scanning a start barcode is then all it takes to fully automate photography sequences, mannequin rotation, lights, and post-processing. That, or a single click of the mouse runs all stages of production, with pre-programmable operations running the background. This way, complex processes become easily repeatable by any human resources, from new team members to student interns.

Question 8

How long does a ghost mannequin last?

Accepted Answer

The ghost mannequins on offer are either construction of a high-quality FRP or PP material. Both materials are eco-friendly, durable, drop resistant, and scratch proof. Additionally, some feature removable pieces with magnetized dicing for even safer combination and disassembly. This not only speeds up workflows in the studio, it can increase the average lifespan of the mannequin. Meanwhile, there are different mannequin bases, stands, and rotating plates that easily integrate into production. Some serve as strong steel bases on wheels with locking mechanisms, others as standalone rotating platforms for the mannequin. Also, some models securely mount to and detach from the Cube robot when operating it as a rotating mannequin stand. For safe storage and movement on-location, there are also optional storage carts that can hold multiple mannequins.
