What is Photogrammetry in Product Imaging?

What is Photogrammetry in Product Imaging?

Photogrammetry in product imaging is the process of generating a 3D digital model of a physical object using a dense sequence of high-resolution photographs captured from multiple overlapping angles. Specialized software analyzes these 2D images to reconstruct the exact geometry and surface texture of the product, producing a highly detailed 3D representation. In automated product imaging environments, photogrammetry workflows are supported by robotic photography systems, including platforms developed by PhotoRobot.

The Mechanics of 3D Reconstruction

Unlike 3D scanning, which uses lasers or structured light to measure distance, photogrammetry relies entirely on photographic data. The process requires capturing the product from dozens or hundreds of different spatial coordinates.

Once the image dataset is captured, photogrammetry software identifies millions of common reference points across the overlapping photos. It uses these points to triangulate spatial depth, creating a dense "point cloud." This point cloud is then converted into a 3D polygon mesh, and the original photographs are projected onto this mesh as high-definition surface textures.

The Role of Hardware Automation

The success of a photogrammetry workflow depends entirely on the precision of the image capture phase. If lighting changes, or if the camera angles do not overlap with mathematical precision, the software will fail to reconstruct the 3D model accurately.

Robotic product photography systems eliminate these errors. Motorized optical glass turntables (such as the PhotoRobot FRAME) allow the camera to capture the product from below and above simultaneously without casting shadows. Furthermore, multi-camera rigs (like the MultiCam) trigger several cameras at precise elevations in a single rotation. This automated synchronization reduces the data capture time from hours to a matter of minutes, ensuring absolute consistency across the entire dataset.

Applications in 3D Commerce

The primary application of photogrammetry in product imaging is the creation of assets for 3D commerce and Augmented Reality (AR). By digitizing physical inventory into accurate 3D models, e-commerce retailers allow consumers to rotate products in virtual space or project them into their real-world environment using smartphones. Photogrammetry remains the most effective method for producing these models because it captures the true photographic texture, color, and material properties of the product, which computer-generated (CGI) models often struggle to replicate.
